This three-story, 75,600 SF facility for (288) E1-E4 student airmen is part of a multi-phase, multiple building design and construction program for the Air Force Joint Strike Fighter program. Located in a newly developed area of the base, site infrastructure expansion has been planned to support future building phases of the JSF Program.
Room program functions for the new facility include (144) two-person room modules, a day room and laundry room on each floor, administrative areas, storage and other support functions. Exterior site development includes a gazebo, parking areas, sidewalks and utility installations.
Primary design challenges centered around meeting LEED Silver requirements for energy efficiency. Increased wall and roof insulation was utilized, with specialized exterior envelope details developed to reduce air infiltration. HVAC system improvements included significant design adjustments to incorporate high efficiency mechanical components and exhaust air heat recovery. Sustainable site features included the utilization of xeriscape landscape design, permeable paving and the maximization of green areas. The project achieved USGBC LEED "Silver" Certification under NC v2.2.
